On Tuesday Mary, Susan and David, our terrific cameraman in Nairobi, drove 70km out of the capital to meet Gitu Wa Kahengeri at his home and interview him for our upcoming documentary.
In the 1950s, Gitu took an oath in support of the Mau Mau Freedom Movement. He was subsequently arrested with his father and sent to a works camp on Manda Island off Kenya's east coast where he did seven years of hard labour.
Gitu Wa Kahengeri has been a central figure in the Mau Mau quest for justice and continues to represent veterans and victims of torture as President of the Mau Mau War Veterans Association. Mary, Susan and David were also pleased to meet and talk with other Mau Mau veterans who had gathered at Gitu's house.
The documentary is now entering the edit phase and - we hope - will be ready to share in July.
